March 2015 Member Meeting Details

TITLE AND DESCRIPTION:

Nutrition Literacy: Design and Delivery of Effective Print and e-Communications

 

Please join us at the 2015 SVAND Education and e-Communications Focus Meeting.  Information regarding the current state of literature related to health and nutrition communications will be discussed.  In addition, best practices associated with using social media in dietetics practice, along with comparisons of various social media outlets will also be presented.

Directions:

 

  • Turn at Comfort Inn Suites in Radford on to Lovely Mount Drive; proceed for 0.8 mile.

  • Turn LEFT onto Dry Valley Road and cross the bridge over the interstate (I-81); proceed for 1.4 mile;

  • Turn RIGHT onto Sale-Selu Lane.

  • The turn is easy to miss; portions of this road are unpaved .

  • Follow the road to the end, where it will climb a hill and stop at the Selu Conservancy retreat center. The building that looks like a Barn with a silo is the multipurpose room where we will meet.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES:

  • Participants will consider the current state of literature related to health and nutrition communications.  The program will also explore best practices associated with using social media in dietetics practice, along with comparisons of various social media outlets.

  • Upon successful completion of the program, the participant will be able to:

    • Summarize the current state of literature related to health and nutrition literacy.

    • Apply health literacy strategies into practice using the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Health Literacy Universal Precautions Toolkit.

    • Apply key principles of the Clear Communications Index to improve written communications.

    • Describe best practices associated with utilizing social media in dietetics practice.

    • Compare the strengths and weaknesses of various social media outlets.

    • Identify social media outlets relevant to practice/career and procedures for creating an account.
