TITLE AND DESCRIPTION:
Advocacy and Public Policy: Increasing Engagement of Dietitians in the Legislative Process
This live professional development activity will present information regarding current state and national legislative policies relevant to the practice of Registered Dietitians. Research regarding nutrition policy and major pieces of nutrition-related legislation at the national level will also be presented for review and discussion. Participants will also learn how registered dietitians can increase their voice and engagement in public policy and legislative processes at the district, state and national level.

Describe major organizations and government institutions at the national level that work to promote a healthy diet to prevent obesity in the United States.
Identify three key pieces of legislation on both a state and national level that effect dietetics practice, including but not limited to upcoming changes proposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to update the Nutrition Facts panel and provide oversight for menu labeling.
Recognize efforts being made by the Virginia Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics to represent dietitians in public policy issues within the state of Virginia.
Understand the importance of why dietitians need to be involved in public policy and comprehend best methodologies to increase participation in nutrition policy issues at the district, state and national level.
